People and communities around the world continue to feel the impacts that natural disasters have on the environment.

Over the course of one month, the world has seen severe devastation across multiple regions, including Nepal, the United States, and Colombia, to name a few. Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and wildfires have tremendously affected these regions and people. And not only do these events disrupt the lives of people, but international trade and business as well. Only by the kind hearts, volunteers, and emergency responders can civilians return to their normal lives sooner.

Many of these donations come from individuals wanting to make an impact by contributing food, clothing, money, or even labor. However, companies in recent years have begun to spend more money when it comes to providing aid during emergencies. According to The Conference Board, 61% of companies have increased their disaster philanthropy since 2020 (The Conference Board, 2023). They have also noted that 72% of firms extend their support for short-term recovery (The Conference Board, 2023).

With extended efforts and increased spending, companies may have their machines functioning in different ways to support relief. This being the case, many of these corporations have to make sure their systems and equipment are operating efficiently. In this blog, we’ll talk about how inefficient machines may delay disaster support. We’ll discuss current events unfolding and how the damage has impacted everyone in the vicinity. And finally, machine efficiency will be examined to show how much of an influence this can make during critical situations.

Inefficient Machines Delay

Outside of natural disasters, machine failures and operational delays have a variety of different effects on manufacturers and logistics. Whenever equipment becomes damaged or slowed, it can affect the production line by:

For example, Coca-Cola used its own delivery trucks during the aftermath of the Indian Ocean Tsunami to help stranded survivors obtain fresh water (Useem and Wry, 2017). This happened after a quick decision to convert their soft-drink Sri Lanka facility into bottled-water facility (Useem and Wry, 2017). If efforts like this had been mismanaged or delayed, it could have caused these families even more hardship. But this was in a situation where communities were well known and easier to access from the coast. What if you have a natural calamity that is unforeseen and rapidly produces destruction in the mountains?

Current Problem in Nepal

One major example of these calamities is flash floods. Depending on the speed and volume, flash floods can be devastating, which is exactly what we see happening in Nepal. As of September 3, 2026, the damage caused by the flood has yet to be fully estimated, but videos of the event suggest whole cities need rebuilding. As for people, according to BBC News, there are so far reports of over 1200 deaths with nearly 4700 people still missing (BBC, 2026). One of the most distinctive problems occurring is navigating all the mountain tunnels, caves, and remote areas that are now filled with water.

As the numbers continue to update, several organizations have decided to step in and help support the ongoing efforts in Nepal. One organization that has involved themselves is Crisis Response International (CRI). Although they don’t have any data on the exact goals or objectives they pursue, they are gearing up to send two (potentially three) waves of volunteers. This destruction has already caused billions of rupees in estimated damage to governmental property alone (Tamang, 2026).

With this flood affecting infrastructure as heavily as it is, how does it ultimately affect manufacturing and logistics? According to The Kathmandu Post, this flood has completely wiped out the vital Rasuwa-Kerung trade route (Prasain and Prasain, 2026). Understanding this from a national perspective is important in comprehending the importance this route has gained, and how catastrophic its destruction is. The Rasuwa-Kerung trade route was the largest ‘all-weather’ commercial road and overland gate between Nepal and China (Prasain and Prasain, 2026). As Nepal’s second biggest trade partner, China has encouraged the imports and exports of electronics, vehicles, clothes, and other common goods (Prasain and Prasain, 2026).

This tragedy occurred at one of the most inconvenient times for Nepal’s importation. Around August and September, Nepal has two major fall festival, Dashain and Tihar. Due to these culturally significant holidays, demand for certain products increases (Prasain and Prasain, 2026). According to The Kathmandu Post, the flood has “…wiped out this all-weather international trade point without a trace” (Prasain and Prasain, 2026). In the process of this, entire factories and important infrastructure were torn away in seconds.

How Warehouses and Automation Support Relief

With disasters like this being unfortunately common in some regions, how has automation and warehousing provided relief over time? Although we don’t have specific details, several major companies have used their warehouse and distribution networks to support these circumstances.

One major example of this is Home Depot’s “Disaster Relief” program. This initiative was established on August 24, 1992, corresponding with the devastating Hurricane Andrew. During this time, Home Depot shifted their warehouse production and distribution to supply the hurricane victims (Home Depot, n.d.). One huge factor that may have helped with this is the role of automation. Automation allows businesses to precisely transport and move product in calculated windows. This helps efforts tremendously as this results in:

  • Faster order processing
  • Improved inventory tracking
  • Minimized costs
  • Reduced manual handling

As of 2025, Home Depot has contributed 9 million dollars to prepare for these occasions. They’ve stated that they’re committed to helping these communities “… from beginning to end of a natural disaster” (Home Depot, 2025).

Another major example of organizations helping relief efforts is Amazon. The way they have been able to help disaster victims is through their supply chain network. Amazon states that they have 15 disaster hubs located around the world (Amazon, 2025). With the number of locations and resources they have, they have amassed a great influence on the supply chain. It’s also helpful that Amazon has fully embraced automation in their warehouses. These two factors allow them to help donate over 30 million relief items worldwide since 2017 (Amazon, 2025).

By using this style of logistics, Amazon has the ability to use:

  • Local storage
  • Regional drivers
  • Global knowledge
  • Employ different delivery methods

Disaster relief depends on more than donations alone. Essential supplies must be received, stored, sorted, transported, and delivered to the correct locations. Automation and material-handling systems can support this process by helping warehouses manage increased volume, reduce handling delays, and prepare critical shipments efficiently.

Technology alone cannot rebuild a community. However, when reliable automation is combined with experienced workers, organized logistics, and a shared commitment to helping others, it can strengthen the people carrying out that recovery.
